WHAT IS COACHING

A lot has been said about coaching. It seems to be everywhere. The bottom line is does it work, and will it work for you?

Coaching is a supportive relationship between the coach and client/coachee, with a primary focus on helping individuals or groups of people (client/coachee) identify their vision and goals, create a plan, and then put that plan into action. Coaches are totally devoted to the coachee's well-being and success, and sometimes act as a sounding board, often a mentor, and at times, a challenger. Coaches are people developers. They do not tell their clients what to do; they ask questions. Unlike consultants who traditionally take the approach of "Any problem that you are facing right now, I will fix it for you", a coach will help the clients see where their strengths lie and will help them come up with solutions to the problems themselves.

Coaching is about change, and change entails learning. Learning is not just about obtaining knowledge, it requires being able to demonstrate this knowledge by taking action. The coach’s role is to observe and provide an objective perspective on the issues and problems on what is working and what is not working.

Coaching is also a process of inquiry, analysis, contemplation and resolution with the intention of furthering the development of both individuals and the organisation itself. It is aimed not just at improving the performance of the team and of the business, but also at giving individuals the tools they need to successfully progress in their own career. This is because coaching is more than a set of management actions for improving improvement. It involves supportive approach to allow others realize their potential.

In addition, coaching helps facilitate people in their own commitment and enthusiasm to accomplish their objectives. Everyone can be a coach to help others. Everyone can experience improvement in life through the help of a caring, resourceful and focused coach. Coaching is simple, it is effective, and it is applicable to a dozen areas of life.
